HOMEOWNER GUIDE

Before paying a tradesperson’s deposit

Check the purpose, payee and terms before transferring money.

Understand why it is needed

A deposit may cover ordering materials or reserving time. Ask for its purpose, amount and cancellation terms in writing. No single percentage makes a deposit safe for every job.

Verify the payment details

Check that the payee matches the business you have agreed with. Independently verify unexpected changes to bank details using a previously established contact route. Obtain an invoice and keep receipts.

Choose with protection in mind

Check the protection available for the proposed payment method and transaction. Qualifying credit-card purchases may have Section 75 protection, but conditions apply. See MoneyHelper’s current guidance. Avoid assuming a small deposit or a scheme logo guarantees recovery.

Further guidance: MoneyHelper: paying by card. Requirements vary with the work and location. Check current guidance for your circumstances.
